摘要:

To naturalize intentionality is to explain the source of its normativity in naturalistic terms. A representation is normative in that it can misrepresent and can refer to a distal cause rather than a proximate one. A dominant strategy for naturalizing intentionality has been to ground it in correlational information. Through their historical employment by organisms—producing effects that contributed to survival and reproduction in the past—such correlations acquired stabilized functions. This approach, often called informational teleosemantics. However, it faces numerous challenges. I propose an alternative framework based on emergent dynamics and Peircean biosemiotics. Within this framework, a representation is understood as an irreducibly triadic process: for something to function as a sign, it must be interpreted as representing something in some respect. Moreover, representations exist in hierarchically dependent types. This hierarchy of representation sheds light on many linguistic phenomena that have long resisted explanation within the philosophy of language.
